Sports Show brings barbershop to radio

Ricky Moore has come full circle.
The Raleigh native and Word of God basketball standout left to attend Hampton University on full scholarship but later transferred to Greensboro College and switched to football, the sport his father played for the Green Bay Packers.
After a stint in the Buffalo Bills training camp, Moore played in the AFL before returning to Raleigh with a wife and daughter in tow. Moore owns a t-shirt distribution company, but that's just his day job. His heart is in his year-old radio show, "Barber Shop Talk with Rick Mo 6-4," Saturdays on WAUG 750 AM from 11 a.m. to noon.
Barber Shop Talk began in 2006 as a tri-weekly TV show on RTN/10 and gained quite a following. Looking to reach a bigger audience, Moore shopped his program around to area media outlets to no avail. Then an uncle and St. Augustine's graduate suggested he try there. Moore hooked up with Donal Ware, general manager of St. Aug's radio and TV stations, and eventually signed a radio contract.
"I liked his energy. Rick is extremely energetic, he's extremely passionate; he kind of reminded me how hungry I was when I started 'From Press Box To Press Row,' " said Ware, referring to his sports Internet Web site. "I thought it was a good product. It's talk that you would hear in a barbershop."
Lesson No. 1: Bigger isn't always better. Take our economy for example. While small and minority businesses are suffering too, we are still what's holding this economy up - such as it is. After getting the thumbs down from the bigger media boys, Moore was given a chance by an HBCU.
Since the show's premiere last year, Moore and his four-person staff are becoming the talk of the Triangle. Barber Shop Talk isn't just a sports talk show, it's a life lessons show.
"I named it that because going to the barbershop is where men get together; for black men it's like our country club," Moore said. "The only membership you need is to come in and get a haircut. The conversations can switch gears at any moment - sports, Obama, women, cars, clothes, black history, you name it."
Staff members' Slick Brown (co-host), the Gravedigger (old-school comedian), Angelina Wakefield (fashion), Big Smooth (high school sports) and Marrel Allen (intern) complement Moore. You can read all about them at www.barbershoptalk.net.
And about their Web site, Lesson No. 2: It isn't always about the money. There are many ways to get paid. Barter or trade, as some like to call it, can produce bigger rewards down the line than an instant check.
"I didn't have money for a site, so I called around and nobody wanted to do a trade," Moore, 29, said. RTP Designs said 'I'm going to take a chance on you. I see your vision.' They did my whole Web site for barter."
Others are also seeing Moore's vision. His outgoing and positive personality is infectious. He's on a first-name basis with the CEO of Progress Energy; he can get tickets to just about any concert; he still has connections with former NFL, AFL and NBA buddies; and - to put the cherry on the cake - those same folks who told him to hit the road, now want hitch a ride. Go hitchhike.
Moore said he has big plans for his future - Howard Stern look out. "I pray that we never take anything for granted because at any second, it can be taken away from us," he said. "Donal gave me an opportunity, and I took it and ran with it. You wouldn't believe the people who said I couldn't do this, I couldn't do that."
Lesson No. 3: Pray about everything, and in everything give God thanks.

7. THERE WILL BE A $15.00 (NON-REFUNDABLE) FEE IN ORDER TO COMPETE AND YOU WILL BE REQUIRED TO SIGN A RELEASE FORM.
